QED — A Guide to Armageddon (BBC)

On 26th July 1982, the BBC broadcast “ A Guide to Armageddon ” [YouTube] as part of the QED documentary 1 series which ran between 1982 and 1999. The programme was written and produced by Mick Jackson and is clearly an early blueprint for Threads , although Threads was updated following several important scientifically credible ideas particularly that of nuclear winter. The programme was 30 minutes in length and was a detailed investigation into the effects of a nuclear weapon exploding over a large city, London being the chosen example. It theorised what effect a 1 megaton airburst weapon would have and demonstrating vigorous impartiality, the programme cited it sources at the very beginning: Sources for " QED A Guide to Armageddon ": Glasstone, S and Dolan J. "First they took the Communists, but I was not a Communist, so I said nothing. Then they took the Social Democrats, but I was not a Social Democrat, so I did nothing. Then it was the trade unionists' turn, but I was not a trade unionist. And then they took the Jews, but I was not a Jew, so I did little. Then when they came and took me, there was no one left who could have stood up for me." Why people confuse luck with merit:

"This just goes to show that if you want to succeed in this world you don't have to be much cleverer than other people, you just have to be one day earlier."" A lethal and frequently used political strategy:

"Once poor people are persuaded that their poverty is their own fault, that whoever has made a lot of money must deserve it and that they too could become rich if they tried hard enough, life becomes easier for the rich." The toxicity of historical myth

Pre EU Britain holds the same appeal "The spirit of 1914 became a mythical symbol of national unity," (from "The Third Reich in Power, 1933 - 1939: How the Nazis Won Over the Hearts and Minds of a Nation" by Richard J. Why Britain will never produce a Google:

A profound observation:

"a country is considered the more civilized the more the wisdom and efficiency of its laws hinder a weak man from becoming too weak or a powerful one too powerful." Modern leaders repeat this

"The German leader was not a 'normal' statesman. He did not want to come to a mutually agreeable compromise and it did not matter to him that his 'facts' were wrong."
